Stem-changing verbs. The boot shape: every form changes EXCEPT nosotros and vosotros, which stay regular.

The rules

  • Tipo #1: simple stem change, no irregular yo (poder, jugar, querer, pensar, pedir…).
  • Tipo #2 (mini-bota): e→ie stem change PLUS irregular yo form ending in -go (tener → tengo).
  • Tipo #3 (mini-bota): e→i stem change PLUS irregular yo form ending in -go (decir → digo, seguir → sigo).
  • All tener idioms inherit Type 2 behavior: yo tengo calor, yo tengo que estudiar.
  • u→ue is unique to jugar — no other Spanish verb has this stem change.

How the boot works

  • BOTA = boot. Stem changes happen everywhere EXCEPT nosotros and vosotros — those forms stay regular, drawing the boot shape on the conjugation grid.
  • Tipo #1 = simple stem change (no irregular yo).
  • Tipo #2 = mini-bota: e→ie stem change + irregular yo ending in -go (tener → tengo).
  • Tipo #3 = mini-bota: e→i stem change + irregular yo ending in -go (decir → digo, seguir → sigo).
  • All tener idioms inherit tener's Type 2 conjugation (yo tengo + idiom).
